I wanted to show you guys the mod I am working on right now. The Destruction derby 2 mod.

now I know Razor is working on the DDRaw mod, but I had this dd2 model on my computer and the idea for the mod in my head for a while. I also wanted to do this mod to provide an alternative to the Banger racing TC, which I think is kind of.... simple.

The mod will be a replacement of the entire c2 game with new cars and a couple of tracks. It is supposed to be a small ripped version of c2, only featuring the dd2 content. (perhaps expanded with other custom tracks) Right now I have the car model with all different textures ingame. Each car has smashable textures all over it, meaning a clean skin at start but after a few bashes it will get dented. Combined with the model deformation of c2, this looks pretty neat.

So far I have done 1 track, all cars (22) with simple models, sound effects, driver and car images and some menu changes;









I still need to work on some more tracks (chalk canyon), car handling and perhaps some other menu changes.

consider this as my re-entry into c2 modding. Been away for a while haven't i?

Wow, some really nice Carmageddon mods in the works! I'll have to reinstall my Carma2 when these are done!

heh, really nice. You going to beta test it or wait until you're done with all tracks?
Stripped out version will not include peds like SoD?

Well I ususally test all my work during the process. I am just not releasing it yet because I want to bring it to a better level. It's not finished, simple as that.

yep, no peds in this one, if possible. I have to look into what I can and cannot strip from the game.

We should combine both mods into one huge mod, create a launcher so that you can choose between DD2 mod, DDRAW mod or both.

I did do a shabby version of Chalk Canyon if you want the Sketchup file, Harm. I think it may be out of proportion though.

Heh sure, perhaps I can change the proportions of the track or take it as a base. I've got all textures of the track ripped from the playstation version of the game, so the building can begin.

Just a thought. This has happened to me testing other stuff before.
Make sure in your RACES.TXT you don't have explict opponents set (that may not exist) or too many opponents (just keep at "-1" for number of opponents) for the new race.

well, I think I need to do the opposite. I tested the game with all non-used cars deleted without setting specific opponents and the game crashed. Only when I use specific opponents I can get rid of the cars that are unused. Also, 18 opponents is the max I think, which I currently have in the track.

Just messing with the HUD and the menu files right now. There is actually a lot that can be stripped from the installment...

Yes, 19 opponents (20 + the player) kept crashing me, 18 loaded but caused a lot of problems eventually, I've had to narrow it down to 12 to not cause problems.

This is so great, thanks a lot for begging to do the work!

I hope that one day you'll done with adding every track from the DD2 game, specially the deathpit It's 11 tracks including every bowl if I remember right?

Also, such a shame if we canot use more than 12 cars =(

I know it's a shame, I'm not sure if it's a Carma problem or due to the cars but ultimately it's due to the Carmageddon AI, that random teleport crap when you get out of range of the opponents, then you get back in range they have to get set back onto the track whilst travelling at the speed they were when teleporting.. If they hit a wall or something or another car they can bend in an unbendable way causing the game to crash or they can just fly straight off the map (I'm not sure about through the map as I've never experienced that before).


Harm, if you ever need any tracks from me, I'm willing to make some for you.

I see there is a lot of excitement around this thing! Good

I've been ripping textures the last hours. Had to redo the chalk canyon since I accidentally deleted my previous ripped textures... I've started work on the death bowl aswell.

The ripping of the textures is a rather tedious job to be honest... Especially the textures of teh death bowl are a mess to put back together again. The psx emulator tends to cut them up in parts of 64x64 or smaller, and so I have to either rebuild some or find out what part fits where. Anyway, the chalk canyon and the death bowl are the next tracks to come around.

Also : Some fantasy track(s) in additional to the 11 (or so) original tracks would be awesome. There are not enough tracks with huge ass jumps, loops and crazy shit in it, are you up for the task?

no, unfortunately I cannot get my hands on the 3d models of the tracks. I have to rebuild them totally.

I finished the Death bowl today, though I still need a smart sollution for killing the driver when it falls down in the pit. I decided to finish the other two arenas first and then move onto the racetracks. The Pit is next. Here are some shots. I'm also working on the HUD, figuring out what I can and cannnot move and change.

Heh, thanx bud. Here's some screens of 'The Pit'. unfortunately the textures in the middle show some seams... This is due to the lame image filtering C2 or the glide wrapper uses. Now that I think of it, I can shift them a little so they blend better...

Perhaps you guys can also see I have changed the field of view a little to widen the screen. This gives the game a bit more speed and looks more like dd2 looked like. Not too much though, because a too wide field of view fucks up the game feeling.

Other than that - brilliant!

One thing, can you make two version of the death pit? I would love one where you don't die by falling down ... Yeah I know it's stupid, but allways dreamed of having a wreckfest and still be able to run around / do it again..

Also, how are the physics? Too much grip will suck, so please make it somewhat.. loosy.. It would be cool having DD with some allright physics =)

Found a work around for the 20 car thingy? DD has allways been with 20 cars, sure I can do comprimisses, but try at least and see if there is anything you two can put your heads togheter and find a workaround on

And last - we need a movie of this soon

Absolute last : The music from the game is out on various torrent sites, could be cool of you included that in the mod too

If you want to listen to the music with C2 then just stick the DD2 CD into your optical drive (or a CD with with the tracks burnt to it) and it'll play with C2 when you enable music ingame. Or just play it with a media player whilst you're playing the game (no lag during track changes then).

I am able to run 18 opponents in one track, making a total of 19 drivers, opposed to the max of 12 Razor can play. It must be related to the opponent cars being recovered into thin air. The death bowl was crashing at first, but after adding an invisible box around the map it stopped crashing.

I believe 19 opponents is possible, but in my case I think I made an error in the cars txt files. I am not that worried, I think it is solvable, just didn't focus on that yet.

about the physics, I want the car to be a bit 'heavier' than the original cars in c2. This means that the suspension bounces a bit more, car impact is more devastating. Instead of incresing the mass, I want to experiment with the moment of innertia of the car, found in the 'angular momentum settings' and the 'downforce to weight' parameters. these are sensitive values, so I am not sure how it will turn out.

oh and about the speed this project is in, let me remind you guys; first; it was weekend and second; the bowls are not really that hard. Things will probably slow down when I start working on the more complex tracks.

Like I said more opponents are possible but due to some unknown problem that I have with my vehicles, they seem to cause the game to crash at random points in a race, which is rather irritating.

Sounds very good, hope we'll manage to find a way for that last car Sure, 20 cars or even 23 cars isn't that big of a deal, it's just a minor detail I want hehe

One thing, is it somewhat possible to recreate total destruction mode? And how does the car behaves? Does they fly around? That's the part I loved about DD2, it were totally fucking nuts, but so damn good!

I have been working on the colosseum track today, finished the model files but I still need to do a lot of puzzling to get that floor texture complete



On another note I have changed the large font of the menu to the dd2 font. This is quite a lot of work actually. I am doubting if I will change the entire menu to a dd2 styled menu, using those round buttons as selectors. Since there is no track selection screen in carmageddon2 I cannot mimic the tracks seclection like we have it in dd2, so I doubt is such a system would be usefull. I can shift the text in a different order and make the menu more dd2 like in my own way.
